Battery & starting
Battery test, starter and alternator check.
Service description
We test how well the battery holds a charge and check that the starter and alternator work properly, to isolate the exact cause of your starting problems.
Why does it matter?
The battery supplies the electrical power needed to crank the engine when starting. In very cold weather, engine oil thickens and the battery naturally loses much of its power. Making sure your starting system is in good health means your car starts on the first try on freezing mornings.

When to plan this service?
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Battery test | Usually recommended once a year before the deep cold arrives, or as soon as starting gets a little slow. |
| Average lifespan | Depending on the winters and how you drive, batteries often last 4 to 5 years in Québec. |
| Terminal care | Cleaned and lubricated yearly to prevent corrosion and ensure a good electrical contact. |
What we do
- Electronic test of the battery’s charge capacity
- Check of the starter and charging system (alternator)
- Terminal cleaning
- Battery replacement if needed
When to see a mechanic?
- Slow start
- Battery light on in the dashboard while driving
- Headlights or interior lights noticeably dimming at idle
- Current battery more than four years old
FAQ
Why do batteries fail so often in winter?
Intense cold slows the chemical reactions inside the battery and reduces its power, just when a cold engine needs much more energy to crank.
How can I tell whether it is my battery or my alternator?
Our tests check both components. If the battery does not hold its charge while the alternator works properly, the battery is the part to replace.
What do you do with my old battery?
We can take back all old batteries and make sure they are sent to an accredited recycling centre.
